Sim Walters

Bassoon

Sim (they/them) moved to lutruwita in 2012 from Boorlo where they were Principal Contrabassoon with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra from 2009. Sim is a regular member of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and Van Diemen’s Band and appears regularly as a guest musician with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Australian Classical and Romantic Orchestra. Sim’s freelance work includes engagements with all of Australia’s major Symphony Orchestras, Opera Australia, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Australian World Orchestra and the Australian Haydn Ensemble. In 2015 Sim was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellowship for study of Baroque Bassoon Performance Practices which has taken their career in an exciting new direction. Sim’s passion for early music and the editing of unknown, unpublished manuscripts led them to complete doctoral research at the University of Tasmania and in 2019 they were granted a research residency at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz. Sim believes in the power of music as a universal language; one that unites all of humanity and provides us with a transformative, provocative and inspiring means for reflection and change on both personal and community levels.
